LG_W2486L_intro2.jpgImageFor an average user, question of monitor backlight is, in most cases, a trivial one. Most users simply don’t like to see too much backlight breach along edges along with bright or smudgy black areas. And that’s it, for an average user. In case you do need good display, and do pay attention to small details, you expect much more from your monitor’s backlight. LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlight is often mentioned as better and more energy efficient solution, but only in case RGB LED technology is correctly implemented. Changing neon backlight for an LED does sound like a simple task in theory, but this can also present some new problems. Since LG W2486L does have LED backlight, and we will check out how LG did its homework.

LG_W2486L_side_t.jpg Manufacturer nicely utilized advantages of LED backlight and made a thin monitor of pleasant and appealing exterior. On the front side, below display, is located piece of transparent plastic which visual effect that annot be easily described. It should be seen with your own eyes. Unfortunately, there was no room for power adapter in monitor chassis so you will have to live with external one, but in this case, where this solution is reasonable, it isn’t such a big problem. Controls are nicely marked so you won’t have any trouble finding right touch sensitive buttons to navigate and use OSD menu.

Our gradient test was designed to show errors in display of color gradients. Although this monitor passed this test with no error, it also pointed out the problem with color display: whole red spectrum is, well, pastel. This is without any doubt problem with LED backlight. Because of this “anomaly” picture can be often described as “cold”, since blue tones are becoming dominant (since reds are lacking) in overall spectrum. This is something that user can get used to since all colors are there but not in right ratios. In addition, we should mention that whole arsenal of Smart “This and That” Technologies and OSD controls cannot correct this problem since problem is in base hardware setup. On the other hand, this is first monitor for which we could say that there is absolutely no backlight breaching, while blacks are uniform on whole panel surface. Viewing angles are average (nor bad nor spectacular), and in any case more than enough for everyday exploitation. Response times are slightly above average. Minimal effects of motion blur will be appreciated by all gamers and movie lovers since those activities on this monitor will be pleasant experience.
