One of the most important (subsystem) components in any PC configuration is hard drive (or storage in general), because its performances have direct impact on performances of whole system. Since all our data is stored on hard drive(s) (storage) it is clear that HDD can be performance bottle neck. Some users solve these problems by creating RAID disk systems, while others are using SSD drives. SSD technology, although offer better performance levels, still have two major problems: limited number of write cycles per cell and high price-per-megabyte. Compromise between those two is high performance hard disk drives like WD VelociRaptor that we got in our test lab.

On this year’s CeBIT many leading manufacturers announced that they will present (portable) eSATA SSDs during this year as step forward when it comes to transfer speeds. Silicon Power has complete lineup of these disks for some time with capacities that range from 8 to 64GB. These models have dual interface: eSATA and USB 2.0. In our test lab arrived 32GB model that presents the golden mean when it comes to capacity and price.

Attracting customers is these days very important task for any company, especially on overcrowded PC market of external hard disks. Company Prestigio managed to produce series of external storage devices under the brand Data Safe that has caught a lot of attention. This was achieved by unusual design that was inspired by art and style. New series of external hard disks, Prestigio Data Safe III, comes with wide range of capacities that can reach up to 500GB. Model that we tested had 250GB.

First thing that crosses everyone’s mind upon mention of SSD is high price or, lower price that results in lower performances (much lower even compared with Hard Disk Drives). It doesn’t have to be always like that and many manufacturers are trying to change that prejudice when it comes to SSDs. One of those companies is Silicon Power from which we got one MLC SSD 64GB with low price (for an SSD) and promising specifications.

Intel was always innovator in IT industry even if we don’t consider microprocessor manufacturing. Intel is “guilty” for many IT standards that we all use every day. Some of them become widely accepted and some don’t (BTX for example). SSD disks (Solid State Drive) are already for some time present among us primarily in notebooks (netbooks). Intel has in its portfolio SSD disks that stand out from the crowd (although it’s not that big crowd) because of their performances.
