 After presenting a 2TB WD Green drive, models for the middle segment were skipped and the company went directly to the fastest models. This time, WD joy us with the representative of Black series featuring the largest capacity: whopping 2 terabytes of space. Black Series represents a step forward when the speeds of reading and writing are in question, so we expected no less from the new model, WD2001FASS.

 Price of NAND memory chips are dropping every day, and as consequence, we are witnessing occurrence of more and more SSDs with decent capacity and affordable price. Kingston has jumped on SSD bandwagon early on and now we got one of their SSDNow V+ devices in our test lab. Model that we got has 64GB of capacity while there are 128GB and even 256GB models available depending on region.

 After we reviewed previous, fairly successful, series of Samsung hard drives in our Hard Drive Roundup we were surprised by new F3 series that should queer competitors pitch and possibly take a larger piece of storage market pie. Samsung Spinpoint F1 and EcoGreen F2 series offered good performance rates accompanied with low noise rates, and as such, found themselves in many desktop configurations. We got in our test lab newest Spinpoint F3 series HDD which combines the best features of previous series: speed from F1 and low noise levels from F2 series.

 When asked what hard drive should be purchased, most users would answer: The bigger the better. But is this the right choice? In most cases it is, but we don’t need that much space nowadays, so some of us prefer faster drives, some of silent ones and so on. Luckily there is variety of models to choose from. The time of SSDs is coming for certain, but at the same time hard drives are getting bigger and cheaper. In very near future we can predict transitional period where SSD will be used as system drive while HDD will be used as data storage. Since SSD prices are not showing significant drop tendency, we will be using HDDs for some time in the future. So, we decided to make, maybe for the last time, big hard drive roundup.
