Until now, most notebook and netbook users had problems when it comes to deciding what mouse to use and purchase, which will go nicely with their portable companion. Specialized mouse models (notebook mouse models) are in most cases small, hence not very ergonomic, and not adopted for prolonged usage. On the other hand, traditional mouse models are relatively big, so carrying it around is not a pleasant experience. Engineers from Microsoft noticed this problem and result of their labor arrived in our test lab in form of Microsoft Arc Mouse.
This is one of the first mouse models that has mechanism similar to folding mobile phones. When it is folded, it becomes egg-shaped and resembles to usual notebook mouse models, which is easy to carry around. When unfolded, Microsoft Arc becomes similar to traditional mouse models with shape that resembles circular arc.
All this sounds strange but it actually works ok. Some adjustment time is needed for this mouse since thumb and little finger (pinky) don’t have support like on regular mouse models. When folded this mouse is for 40% shorter, but same folding mechanism has another purpose: it is used to power down mouse and prolong its autonomy. Mouse is powered by two AAA batteries, which provide long autonomy (around 6 months).
On the inside of the folding segment is place for small wireless receiver that holds the receiver thanks to little magnets that are placed inside the plastic case. This is nice feature and you will not lose that receiver which is small, but not as small as we would like it to be, since it cannot be left in USB port while carrying portable around. It sticks out too much. Connection is 2.4GHz wireless and allows usage of the mouse that is even 9m away from receiver (notebook).
This, actually, can be useful for presentations. This mouse uses laser technology for motion tracking that provided smooth and precise experience. Not precise as some desktop models but an notebook mouse more than enough. Microsoft Arc has 4 buttons and wheel along with battery indicator.
Conclusion
Microsoft Arc, after all, isn’t mouse that can be used for long periods of time but you shouldn’t be troubled with that fact too much. Its main purpose is to provide easier utilization of your notebook or netbook on the road. It does its job much, much, better that any other notebook mouse that we encountered so far.
