Page 1 of 2 On this year’s CeBIT Logitech presented successor of very popular keyboards from G series: G19. This keyboard has arrived at our test lab but with high price tag. Are innovations on this keyboard really worth that much or not, you will find out very soon.
If you ever had contact with previous keyboards from G series, dimensions of G19 wont surprise you. G19 is standard full-sized QWERTY keyboard without any special ergonomic features. Additional keys resulted in large overall dimensions compared to usual keyboard models, but still, this new model is smaller than G11 model. Number of additional programmable keys is reduced to 12 which is for 6 keys less than G11. G keys are divided into 3 groups with 4 keys so if you previously own an G11 keyboard some adjustment time is needed. Usual set and macro record keys are located above G keys.
Additional function keys are located on sloped top segment of keyboard. On the left side from display are located keys for display control and windows keys control switch. Display controls are redesigned and much more suited for new display: D-pad with Ok button in the middle with MENU, BACK and application button. On the right side from display are located buttons for back light control, multimedia controls with volume controls below (mute and volume wheel control). Two additional USB (powered) connectors can be found at the back side. All keys are slightly softer compared to G11 model with rough surface. New feature compared to G11 model is new concept of back light. Instead of single color LEDs Logitech used RGB LEDs. So, after drivers are installed you can go into control panel and set color of back light according to your personal taste. Each profile can have its own back light color. This color can be also synchronized with G13 gameboard .
Biggest new feature on new Logitech G19 keyboard for gamers is new, big, crystal clear color LCD with 320x240 resolution. Display is embedded in its plastic casing that is held to the rest of the keyboard with two aluminum fixtures. Display is protected with thick plastic cover that does not produce picture distortions. This display with advanced back lights does need additional power source that provided external power adapter provides. We were unpleasantly surprised by dimensions of this additional power adapter.
Display on G19 can be used to display system or game information. Of course new display with larger resolution can be even used for something else, so Logitech provided few new applets. All usual applets can be used but new system monitor can display information about CPU load for each core with an analog meter. Also there is applet that can display pictures from a folder on local PC with interesting slideshow effects. It can also display videos if you have necessary codec installed. Even HD video can be played on this display but with significant increase in CPU load. YouTube applet will provide you access to on-line videos without need to start web browser even while you play some game, although this scenario is highly unlikely. Unfortunately Logitech provided only few new applets while game developers need to develop by themselves applets for new games. Since there are enthusiast programmers that independently develop interesting new applets every day you should take a look at those also.
