Page 1 of 2 Specialized mini gaming keyboards (gameboards) exist on the market for some time. Logitech presented their vision of such device in form of G13 model. Logitech G13 has good ergonomics, mono LCD display (GamePanel) that is compatible with G15 keyboard series, multicolored backlight and small joystick.
Unlike other gaming accessories like keyboards and mouses that need to adopt to always evolving gaming market, gameboards are intended for gamers that already have good keyboard and mouse and don’t want to change them for gaming versions. Gamebords are smaller and can easily be placed on any working table or surface and, if not needed, with same ease, put away.
It is clear that Logitech’s intention with G13 was to offer top-class solution and to overshadow the competition. This device very seriously addresses the ergonomics problems and since gaming sessions are in most cases very long, this is one of the most important features. Raised wrist support provides natural position for a hand, while rubber surface prevents slipping and sweating. Keys are sloped, again, following natural position of hand and fingers. Four central keys have indents and present perfect WSAD layout. Top of the G13 is dominated by monochromatic LCD display for additional gaming data. Below display are present macro and function keys. Despite relatively small dimensions good stability of this device provides an metal plate at the base of G13. Thanks to this plate G13 has enough weight, of 650g, that provides grip so you don’t have to chase the device all over the table.
This gameboard has 25 programmable keys. 22 G keys are in main group while additional 3 can be found along and at joystick. Keys are bigger and have much bigger spacing, compared to standard keyboards. Problems can be encountered with keys in lowest row since those can hardly be reached. All keys are programmable (like on G15 and G19 keyboards) by simply mapping keys or assigning macros. Color and intensity of back light can be controlled via drivers.
During test period we concluded that some time needs to be spent on accustoming to G13. First reaction of gamers used to full keyboards was: “OMG, where are my keys!”. Actually after an hour all tested “subjects” admitted that 22 keys are more than enough for almost any game. This also means that Logitech G13 isn’t fully plug’n’play device. Drivers do have profiles for many games (WoW support and LCD applet should be mentioned) but still you need to learn keys layout or create your own for each game. Luckily gaming community embraced these devices with ease, so a lot of profiles can be found on-line or you can offer your own profiles to the community.
