Toshiba Satellite U300 PDF Print

ImageNotebooks from Toshiba were relatively often tested in our test lab, but mostly those were models with 15.4’’ screen diagonal. Models with 13.3’’ are present on market but not as much as 15.4’’. It seems that manufacturers don’t agree with consumers’ claims that notebooks with 13.3’’ screen have best ratio of mobility and functionality. Only one manufacturer that stands strongly with 13.3’’ models is Apple with MacBook series.

All other brands have just one or two models in this class. This time we want to introduce you with Toshiba Satellite U300-153, notebook that is just one from that class.

Design

When it comes to design of this model, U300 would be lined up somewhere in golden mean. Solutions already seen and betting on proven solutions are main characteristics for this little guy. The only interesting detail (that is also seen on bigger models from Satellite series) is unusual cover color. You’ll think that it is black until you bring it under some strong light. Even though it is hard to define that color precisely, we can say that is much closer to dark blue then to black. On the left side, below keyboard, is located Satellite logo which shines with blue light when notebook is powered on. Quite expected, as for 15.4’’ models, mentioned logo can be turned off from BIOS. Quality made suits perfectly to renowned brand, but also to price category.  This means that there are no unpleasant surprises or rough surfaces and edges but it’s also unreal to expect exceptional characteristics and overall firmness.

Screen is reliable, although our criteria might be too strict, because we expect same quality as for model L40 that we consider as accessible model. When we opened notebook we found silver colored interior. On first sight keyboard gets high grades. All substantial keys have just the right size and position. But we were disappointed with “typing” feeling after first contact with keyboard. Bending of keyboard is noticeable so typing isn’t very cozy. Touchpad is precise which compensate its small height.
If we consider the fact that U300-153 is delivered with Windows Vista Home Premium operating system, 1GB memory is minimum for comfortable work. While processor can relatively easy struggle with all user’s needs, HDD just can’t “catch up”. Even if we compare it with some cheaper notebooks, Toshiba Satellite U300 will found itself on bottom of the lineup (even speed rotation of HDD plates from 5400r/min can’t help it). But HDD isn’t the only problem. There is another problem that sticks out – overheating of its left part. We are not talking about some unbearable temperature, but it is very noticeable especially if you are used to use it in your lap and wear thin (fine) pants. During our tests room temperature didn’t cross 25°C (77°F). We can only imagine how much heat this notebook will generate at 40°C (104°F).

Nevertheless there are few less important details that give Toshiba Satellite U300 positive points. Integrated camera with 1.3 MP resolution has a suitable picture with small amount of color noise present in poor lighting conditions. Volume regulator is located on the left side of case. You can call us old-fashioned but we prefer this solution over keyboard shortcuts. For any investment time warranty period is very important. This exact model has a warranty of two years which is great. Small screen and integrated graphics are not large power consumers but autonomy, besides all this, still isn’t a strong point of this notebook. The reason is modest battery characteristics.
