ImageIf you look at U100 and U90 when they’re closed, you wouldn’t notice any difference. But, just one look at screen and the essential difference is revealed – U90 has 8.9-inch screen which is for 1.1-inch smaller than display on earlier introduced model. As for interior is concerned, there are no bigger differences and even BIOS is the same for both models. Quite simple, it wasn’t economical to build completely new model so MSI adapted existing one with few changes in hardware components and software setup.

Since exterior dimensions of Wind U90 are unchanged additional space around screen is covered with border. Sample that we got was colored in black and border around screen was also black. Border around screen is black even on models that are colored differently. Smaller screen doesn’t mean that is has smaller resolution. Resolution is the same as on U100 model, 1024x600, which resulted in tinier GUI elements.

Power consumption of screen makes significant influence on battery autonomy so U90 performs better in that area than its older brother U100. Wind U90 has brighter screen than any other netbook on the market at the moment and readability is good even if set on minimal. On the other side brighter screen resulted in slightly shorter autonomy than its direct competitors that have similar specifications. We got impression that screen is the main selling point of this model. With bright and clear picture of Wind U90 easily takes pole position when quality of display on netbooks is concerned.

One of simplest ways to achieve lower price is to exclude Windows XP from the package. Our sample had SuSe Linux Enterprise Desktop OS preinstalled. Most users would like to see adapted OS on their netbook because work in such environment is a lot easier. Since U90 is almost identical to U100 it is possible to install Windows XP.

We sad that U90 is almost identical to U100 model which means that some differences are present. Exclusion of Windows XP and smaller display are not enough to make a significant price and functional difference.  Because of that U90 lacks also Bluetooth adapter.

Other characteristics are identical to model U100 which can be sad for our impressions too. Keyboard is solid and the biggest flaw still remains: small touchpad - sometimes it is hard to locate keys that are below touchpad. With U90 you will get a bag that is, at our surprise, colored in white. Although it looks nice we got impression that black one would suite this model better and any stains would be less noticeable.

MSI Wind U90 has price tag that is around 50€ lower than for model U100. It is up to you to decide if that difference can be justified with absence of Windows XP and Bluetooth adapter.
