ImageIf you look for familiar brand name when searching for your new notebook then HP will place itself on top of that list. If you don’t have large budget then you will most certainly look for models from “S” class and most probably it will be based on AMD platform. Notebook that satisfies all those characteristics came to our test lab and we are presenting to you: HP Compaq 6735s.

Exterior design of this model is not especially attractive. Its colored black and most surfaces are matte while shine parts are frames around display and keyboard, mesh above keyboard and keys on touchpad. Although most surfaces have matte finish, fingerprints are visible. Since design on this notebook can be characterized as simple presence of only one button for enabling/disabling wireless communication (BlueTooth and WiFi) is logical.  This model has little bit rounder corners than “B” class of HP notebooks.

Materials used for this notebook are not that firm as we would like. This is very noticeable on notebook cover. Luckily display is positioned far enough so pressure on cover doesn’t result in picture deformities. Keys on touchpad work as piano keys (only bottom segment of key is functional). This can be problem in first few days until you get used to. Bending of keyboard is hardly noticeable and if you like big Enter keys you will be disappointed with presence of small one.

On each side of notebook are located 2 USB ports while card reader can be found on front side. Power connector is placed between LAN and VGA connector which is not best position because it can make connecting of external monitor/TV unnecessary complicated. Since there are only few connectors on this model, power connector could be placed on more convenient place.

If we should describe display with one word it would be: average. Display is glare but reflections are not that intense. Speakers are loud with lack of low frequency tones so they cannot be characterized as good.

Performances are decent thanks to Puma platform. Two gigabytes of memory are enough for most applications. Since HP Compaq 6735s has integrated ATI graphics it would be better that this amount of memory was divided into two modules because memory would then work in (faster) Dual Channel mode. Don’t forget the fact that if you plan to upgrade amount of memory on this notebook with one memory slot available it will be very simple: just insert another memory module and you are ready to go. Battery test shows all virtues and flaws of AMD platform. With maximum load, battery drains pretty quickly. This is consequence of, above all, CPUs high power consumption and that is a toll of older manufacturing process. What’s more, on full load cooling solution in this notebook is noisier than most other solutions that we saw till now. On the other hand under minimal load autonomy is very good and this fact will surprise most of users. AMD has redesigned older CPUs and has implemented new power saving algorithms that show all their capabilities only when you use maximum power saving profile. Since these types of notebooks are used for work “in the field” it is obvious that AMD has skillfully corrected its biggest problems.

All that we sad about HP Compaq 6735s can be applied to most notebook models from this class that can be found on the market. If we take a look at hardware specifications this notebook looks as good as any other except of HP badge on (display) cover. Nevertheless HP Compaq 6735s has few trump cards up its sleeve. One of them is 3D Drive Guard that protects hard disk plates by parking hard disk head when detects sudden movement. Other is software that comes with this model. Most models of notebooks on the market come with lot of software that has low usability and only slows down operating system. HP supplies with this model few very interesting applications. One of them is File Sanitizer. Every now and then we hear of stolen notebook and corporate information’s that leaked into public. Although owners of those notebooks have deleted files, data still remains on hard disks. File Sanitizer really deletes data from hard disk so it cannot be “undeleted” even if your notebook gets stolen. With this model you will get even a bag which is another bonus.
