ImageWe are sure that most of you don’t fantasize about big and heavy notebook models, but then again, we are also sure that most of you would like to own a notebook like Acer Aspire 8730G. If multimedia features of notebook mean to you more than mobility and portability than this “giant” will draw your attention for sure. Don’t let this initial description scare you. Although dimensions of Acer Aspire 8730G are noticeable, its weight doesn’t go over 4kg which is not too much for a notebook with 18.4inch diagonal.

We mentioned many times that shiny plastics (piano finish) looks nice but it has its drawbacks in form of tedious maintenance. Well this model also has few surfaces made of such plastics: cover and frame around keyboard and display. Area above keyboard is perforated so fingerprints will be less visible.

Keyboard is solid with hardly noticeable bending at the left side. There is present numeric pad with Acer Media Touch keys located beside it. Acer Media Touch can be used for control of media player, volume control and launch of Arcade Deluxe applications. There is also a key for disabling touch sensitive sensors.

On the left side are located buttons for wireless adapter, internet browser, mail client and Bluetooth module (that wasn’t present on our test model). First impression was that those are also touch sensitive buttons but actually these are common buttons with pictograms that are beside actual button.

Construction of this model is firm with slightly bending that occurs at the right side above keyboard. Palm rest is made out of dark grey plastics and luckily fingerprints are not noticeable on this surface. Whole palm rest area has indentations in form of dashed lines that can be also found on touchpad which is nice detail.

After you power up Acer Aspire 8730G you will notice, beside impressive display size, very “lively” colours. Display itself has Full HD Resolution (1900x1080) with, obviously, 16:9 ratio. Since this is multimedia notebook, glare display is expected choice. Because of this feature, experience of watching HD movies can be described as: perfect. Actually if you place notebook close enough, you can even get experience that is very close to real movie theater. Although Acer Aspire 8730G has good speakers and sub-woofer, best sound experience is guaranteed if you connect notebook with optical S/PDIF cable to good surround speaker system.

Some of you might get impression that 1900x1080 is resolution that will result in small text and icons but don’t forget that this model has display of 18.4inch. Personally I prefer lower resolutions on notebooks but on this notebook I didn’t have any problems with readability.
