This time we have tested projector Sanyo PDG-DSU 20E. First thing you’ll notice is white “i-Pod” color and nice squarish exterior that perfectly fits design concept. White color has a great advantage when it comes to dust because it is much easier to spot dust on grey or black colored surfaces. Projector weight of 2.5kg tells us that this little Sanyo is portable and very useful for small presentations.
Remote controller is matched with projector and it is white and very small. Very small keys on remote controller are result of need for placing all function keys on small remote controller. Adjustment of focus (focus ring) is placed on projection lens while position adjustment of projected picture doesn’t exist at all. This is in direct correlation with price tag for this projector (around 550€). It also doesn’t have mechanism for adjusting height, so we recommend you to wisely choose installation spot for Sanyo PDG-DSU 20E. But, there is something what you can do despite all these defects. You can position it on one lateral and of course, bottom side and in menu you can adjust projected picture accordingly to selected position. So, from that point of view, Sanyo PDG-DSU 20E is very practical for some “demanding” locations.
Provided inputs are: Composite video-in, S-video in, D-Sub and RGB but with remarks on cables. Sanyo included VGA (D-Sub) cable while you need to provide by yourself RGB cable. Beside mentioned inputs there also exists inputs foraudio-in and USB (USB input can be used for update of projectors firmware).
Sanyo projector is warming up a little more than expected but cooling works perfectly, so during the whole testing period temperature was normal as signalized by diode. The greatest advantage of Sanyo PDG-DSU 20E is projection of great picture as for “colorful” movies (animated) as for movies with darker/greyer scenes. Lights from other light sources didn’t have much effect on picture quality, which is great feature for device with price range around 550€. Even much expensive projectors showed themselves in bad light in areas with good artificial conditions. On test-image with full color spectrum, we could see some unnatural gradation from blue to green color, but that was something what cannot be spotted in real world application of device.
To project larger picture it is necessary to place projector from wall or screen for at least 2.5m. But if you want even bigger size of projected picture and you place projector more than 3.5m from projection screen, small resolution of projected picture will result in projection of pixelated picture (movies still look good but presentations won't). This “defect” can be observed easily on projected text. In this situation, built in predefined modes doesn’t help much, so it is our recommendation to do picture adjustment manually. Movie mode is very dark and in case of eco mode activation picture is almost useless. Eco mode doesn’t degrade picture quality and its usage is advisable, except in above mentioned combination (180-watt UHP projection lamp will last much longer in eco mode). Projector besides 4:3 mode supports even 16:9 mode which is great news for all movie fans. And for last, but not least, we should mention that projector has very useful and efficient digital keystone function that minimizes trapezoidal picture deformation up to +/-15 degrees.

Conclusion
For invested money, you will really get a lot. Picture quality of Sanyo PDG-DSU 20E is great, colors are saturated, projector works well in areas with good and poor lighting, it is quiet… So much qualities and one big fault – resolution of projected picture is only 800x600px. But for this price range you can’t have it both ways. And because of nice balance between price and possibilities that Sanyo made with PDG-DSU 20E model, it truly deserves InsideHW Best Buy award.
