ImageLogitech G51 speakers were the first with prefix “G” (G as a short from gamer). Sound, as one of important component of any game, should be the best as possible, so engineers from Logitech did their best to satisfy expectations of most demanding users with this model.

The first thing you’ll spot is definitely futuristic design of G51. Engineers from Logitech were probably led with idea that gamers have affections to that “futuristic” look. All newer games have also that sci-fi flavor, everything looks so cyber, so it is important that everything looks shiny, rounded with plenty of details and to be presented as uncommon product. And games’ manufacturers definitely succeed in that. Every gamer that saw these speakers was pleasantly surprised with design that brought “future” in such a not intrusive manner.

When you look at specifications of this 5.1 surrounding system it seems very attractive. 155W of total RMS power is distributed between 5 satellites and woofer. Each satellite has 20W RMS (8 ohms). Central satellite has a just a bit less power, 19W RMS. That is actually unusual fact if we consider that satellites including central satellite have two identical 2-inch drivers. But, that’s the way things are. Woofer as most powerful component has 56W RMS and 5.25-inch driver and the whole box is made with bass reflex (this exact system of manufacturing bass-box gives the best results on “who can produce more dB” competitions).

We should mention that you can change satellites masks and adjust them to your taste. You must buy them separately; they are not included in package. This is interesting solution that every user should appreciate, especially when modding is spreading in gamers’ population that spends a lot of money on peripherals.
Woofer as “main” component has integrated amplifier that supplies whole system. Dimensions of woofer are not too big; anyway we expected much larger box. On back side are ports for connecting satellites that are implemented through RCA connectors, what we prefer the most. Big minus goes on length of cables because they are really short. For that price range, cables should be longer. For front satellites cables are shorter than 80cm, which is pretty short. With cables for back satellites, situation isn’t any better, cables are shorter than 2m.

What really surprised us is lack of wireless communication between woofer and remote controller. Controller, despite that, looks great. It has all necessary commands that should help you adapt system to your taste. Beside standard volume control wheel there can be also found: “mute” key, few keys for control of every component -woofer and satellites, and three keys for changing modes: Music, Gaming, and Matrix. For “Music” and “Gaming” keys you can guess what they serve for, but “Matrix” mode was implemented for one and only reason – to get quality 5.1 sound from stereo port. Solution was simple and very practical, but how it functions in real world conditions you can read later.

On first listening, we got very good impression. Everything sounded correctly, equalized, all tones are equally balanced. But all this can be applied only when the sound volume is lower than 50%, if it is above 50% high tones outshout the rest. We didn’t like that so we tried to fix it by adjusting satellites. Still, situation didn’t change much. The problem occurred because system was in “Music” mode, when high tones are accented. By changing mode in “Gaming” everything became perfect. Woofer shows its muscles, high tones are well balanced and middle tones are neutral. In movies, games and music, “Gaming” mode is much better choice with better sound quality and well balanced ratio of all sounds. So, if you want everything to sounds great, you just set system on “Gaming” mode and enjoy.

But, Logitech thought on users that didn’t buy high-end sound card, that are still using integrated sound solutions. Just for those consumers, Logitech created “Matrix” mode. This mode dissembles stereo sound on 6 channels, i.e. 5.1. Of course sound reproduced in that way isn’t best but it will do just OK for not too demanding users. The biggest problem with “Matrix” mode is suppressed volume of back speakers which results in not so real 5.1 surround sound but then again you didn’t spend money on high-end sound card.
