We prepared a little surprise for you from Creative, and it is not mp3 player nor is sound card, neither one of products Creative is best known. For this test we got headphones attended primary for all air plane passengers, but also for all those who love great and crystal clear sound. Aurvana X-Fi is their name and it’s obvious that name originate from words Audio and Nirvana. Well, name does tell it all.
Package
When we saw headphones right from the box, it was clear that this is really serious product. Aurvana X-Fi has separate box just for cables, ports and headphones. Box is firm enough to provide secure transport for headphones. In package were also one 1.5m dual plug “oxygen-free” cable of exceptional quality and audio “airline” adapter “3.5mm-to-6.3mm” for attaching headphones in airplane while watching movies. It’s very nice touch from Creative that supplied two AAA batteries so that you can use your new headphones right away.

Headphones
When you look at Aurvana X-Fi you must notice differences that separate them from standard headphones of this type. Aurvana X-Fi looks somehow “out of space”. Great contribution to this impression, gave four keys that light blue whenever you turn on headphones and combination of black and silver color with metal “mesh”. This mesh has its purpose – to protect microphones that used for “noise cancellation” technology. Headphones always cover whole ear (over-the-ear type), they are very comfortable and muffle sounds rather good. Drivers are made from neodymium and they are 40mm in diameter, which is great. On bottom portion of the right earpiece is positioned very precise volume wheel for very fine volume adjusting. One of mentioned lighting keys is on/off button and the rest three are control keys.
First control key is NC (Noise Cancellation) for digital regulation of ambient noise. With this key on, you can listen music with no, or very little, interruption from ambient noise. Also Noise Cancellation helps if you want to “fade away” in-flight (cabin) sounds. All you have to do is to turn on headphones even without cable and to set NC. This way you can use them as earplugs. Aurvana X-Fi will work than as sound “silencer”. Noise Cancellation works on principle of alleviation of low-frequency ambient noise and we must tell you that it is impossible to achieve absolute isolation from ambient noise.

Second control key is X-Fi Crystalizer for achieving crystal clear and rich sound by processing mp3 sound and by correcting flaws in song “code”. Even though it works great with mp3 players, if you connect Aurvana X-Fi headphones to some serious sound card that also processes sound (sound cards like X-Fi or Xonar D2 or similar) sound will be distorted, which is result of double sound processing. Third key is X-Fi CMSS 3D that enables 3D effects for some songs (where it is supported) and give them full potential creating very interesting effect that gives complete new sound dimension (some headphones also have this option but you won’t notice these effects at all).

Conclusion
Final impression is very positive. Headphones are very powerful with all kind of additional options that can be very useful to all frequent travelers and to all audiophiles. The problem can be price: around 300€. As far as we are concern, Creative Aurvana X-Fi headphones are a high-quality product, but can you bear the price, it’s up to you!
