Written by Ivan Todorovic

h55h57_roundup_intro2.jpgImageIntel’s chip wave that appeared as suite for the new Core i3 and i5 CPUs codenamed Clarkdale, containing graphics cores within, was quickly followed by a plethora of motherboards from all sorts of manufacturers. We’ve decided to gather round all motherboards available at the market at the time of this review and determine whether it is wiser to base the decision about which motherboard to buy on the chip itself or the accompanying equipment and capabilities. We’ve had a total of seven models tested, signed by ASUS, Biostar, Gigabyte and MSI, which are the most common choice of buyers.

ASUS_M4A89GTD_PRO_intro2.jpgImageAMD’s 790GX chipset together with the ATI Radeon HD 3300 graphics card has been an excellent choice for those who wished for gaming in lower resolutions, couldn’t afford an expensive discreet graphics solution and wanted to experience all advantages the 790GX offered over the 780G. AMD hasn’t stopped there and presented the market with the 890GX chipset, which can be deemed the successor to the throne of the good old 790GX. The 890GX comes in combo with the SB850 southbridge, just like the 790GX was followed by the SB750. Other than a different southbridge, the main difference between 890GX and 790GX is the new graphics chip, ATI Radeon 4290, which supports DirectX 10.1 and the core of which is clocked at 700 MHz, unlike its predecessor which was clocked at 500 MHz.

High-End_P55_Motherboards_intro2.jpgImageIntel Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs that are compatible with LGA1156 socket, slowly but steadily are becoming interesting choice for wider user group because this socket is direct descendant of “good old” LGA775 and, of course, price drops. Intel P55 chipset is, basically, following footsteps of previous P chipsets (P965, P35, and P45). It is obvious that soon there will be many P55 based motherboards. For now we got two models signed by ASUS and Biostar which are based on same chipset but present two totally different solutions to the same problem.

ASUS_AT3N7A-I_intro2.jpgImageIntel Atom CPUs, for a long time, were combined only with Intel 945C chipset and integrated GMA950 graphics card. Although Intel graphics card is worthless when it comes to games, it is power enough to play HD videos. In addition, this combination has low power consumption levels, so besides HTPCs, it was ideal for office configurations. After lot of troubles, NVIDIA presented its ION platform with support for Intel CPUs. Whole platform is based on Intel Atom CPU, but chipset and graphics card are different, so besides hardware support for HD video reproduction there is also support for DirectX 10. All movie lovers will appreciate this fact, while these features will most certainly be one of the most important features that will promote ION as perfect base for HTPCs. When it comes to power consumption, this new platform should have slightly higher consumption compared to Intel solution.

10_Low-Budget_AMD_Motherboards_intro2.jpgImageSince AMD presented some very interesting low-budget CPUs lately, next good question is: which motherboard should you purchase with that CPU? We decided to review all AM2/AM2+ motherboards with price tag between 50€ and 70€ because we believe that some of those motherboards can be very good choice especially for new Athlon II CPUs. Except price, there was another feature that all motherboards should have: support for DDR2 memory. Since we are choosing motherboard for a budget PC and DDR2 memory is cheaper and offers similar performances to DDR3, it was logical choice. So, let’s get cracking.

BIOSTAR_TA785GE_intro2.jpgImageBIOSTAR is one of the biggest manufacturers when it comes to AMD base small factor motherboards. This model is based on AMD 785G chipset, has 128MB Sideport memory and supports CPUs with TDP up to 125W. However, before we sink our teeth into this motherboard let’s reflect on AMD 758G chipset and its market position.
