XFX Radeon HD 4870 512MB XXX PDF Print

ImageThe trend of expanding product’s portfolio among manufacturers of graphics cards doesn’t abate, and this situation resulted in many new products based on ATI GPUs on the market. Nvidia’s so far exclusive partners are beginning to reject this kind of “monogamy”. For some of those partners this decision was quite expected from the very beginning but XFX came out as a true surprise because of their reputation of being Nvidia’s “hard core” partner. Even though we had to wait little bit more than it was officially announced, the first XFX Radeon was finally introduced.

The feature that is XFX known for is certainly “XXX” series of factory overclocked models combined with quality “aftermarket” cooling solution. American manufacturer used reference cooling system that is labeled as XFX, so that this graphics card could differ from others. Suffix “XXX” on the box is justified by higher clocks regarding referent model. To avoid risk of mistaken this card to some other and in order to underline that this is the XFX product, black coloured circuit board was used. This detail beside its distinctive role has also visual effect so graphics card looks XFX-ish.

You won’t find too many accessories in the package, which really surprised us because even though we are not fans of old software and games, one Assasin’s Creed wouldn’t come amiss. However, bundle is consisted of cables, VGA-DVI and DVI-HDMI converters, unavoidable XFX “Do not disturb I’m GAMING” door sign and disc with drivers. The graphics card itself, basically, doesn’t differ from referent so there is no reason to go further into details.

Model that we got has 512MB GDDR5 memory that operates at 950MHz which is in this case effective 3800MHz, or 200MHz more than referent model. ATI RV770 GPU is also overclocked from default 750MHz to 775MHz. We must admit that XFX was very cautious with clock increasing because in this disposition card was faster from referent for not more than 5%.

You will need two 6-pin molex connectors for power supply of the graphics card since HD 4870 models consume around 150 Watts. Interesting fact is that with this card XFX didn’t go further from referent cooling model for HD 4870, while for HD 4850 and HD 4830 models XFX used its own cooling solutions.

There is nothing much to say for performances during benchmark tests. XFX Radeon HD 4870 512MB XXX is in class with other Radeons HD 4870, maybe just a bit faster, but not in amount that would make significant difference. What we usually cannot disregard is price, so that should be your shopping guide and certainly you must take into consideration models with 1GB of memory, as a better investment.
