Page 1 of 10 The drought slowly starts in the field of graphics cards market. In last few months we tested all what we could, from G80 chip “on heaven” to the pure abyss between the cheapest models, so we “checked” all thoroughly. However, our sense tells us that we slightly ignored mid-class cards. We already talked about 7900GS in several articles, but Radeon X1950PRO was really weakly enlightened. By long waiting of announced 8600GT(S) card which will represent new DX10 accelerators, we tested cards with R570 chips. We know lots about them like, for instance, they are DX9 and SM 3.0 accelerators. It is well known that it uses derivates of R580 chip. We also know that with cooling provided by ATI, they become warmer. That problem ATI bares for a long period of time and it occurs just as on crossing line between “High-End” and “Mid-range” models.
| Specs | Radeon X1950PRO | | GPU | RV570 | | Pixel Shader Units | 36 | | Vertex Shader Units | 8 | | TMU | 12 | | GPU Freq | 581MHz | | Memory | 256MB / 512MB | | Memory Freq | 1400MHz | | Memory Bus | 256bit | |
It seems that it is single point where we could reduce quality. Thus, since from X1800XL via X1900GT which used to have even problematic cooling, to presentation of new X1900GT and alternated cooling of ATI, that problem is not solved yet. The same fate happened to even X1950PRO, which also has weak and noisy cooling by default. Listing manufacturer’s sites on the Internet, we came to interesting conclusion. Namely, most of them decided to take issue in its hands and alternate the destiny of X1950PRO. Of course, this is not the single reason for creating specific comparison test. We also were interested how X1950PRO with 256MB will act against its twin with two times more memory. We compared it in CrossFire regime, and we hope it will surprise you.
