SonicGear i-Steroid 1

Whenever the subject of vacuum tube amplifiers is brought up, it is most likely that someone is discussing expensive hi-fi audio equipment. SonicGear brought this category of amplifiers to the computer world. Their i-Steroid 2.1 system represents a unique attempt at integrating “old-fashioned” vacuum tubes into the cold electronics and high-tech world. The name itself is obviously an allusion to iPod players and that becomes even more obvious by taking a glance at the device itself. ...

Samsung T220

Very often short descriptions in manufacturer manuals for displays are: exceptional design and excellent performances which is the case with Samsung T220. If some monitor looks nice we can see that by ourselves when we take it out from the packaging, but when it comes to other manufacturer’s promise (about performances) we need to check them by ourselves for its authenticity. Samsung T220 satisfied the first half of its description from the moment we put it on the table. ...

Canon IXUS 80 IS

This point-and-shoot camera gives impression of reliability and well built product. Canon IXUS 80 IS has all standard and expected functions without unnecessary “fancy” stuff that some manufacturers implement with intention to attract customers. Canon intended this model for users who desire modern, reliable and quality photo camera without any unusual functions (with limited usability). ...

SanDisk Ducati Extreme

SanDisk, as one of mayor flash memory manufacturers, naturally has big USB flash drive portfolio. It’s very hard to stand out, when there is a huge amount of different USB flash drive models from different manufacturers on the market. Generally speaking, you can only recognize a specific type only by its different USB casing. Design of casing is something that all manufacturers pay attention to attract more customers. On the other hand, in the eyes of final user a big plus is always bigger capacity and speed of data transfers. ...

Intel Core 2 Quad CPUs Side By Side

This time we’ve compared two CPUs: Core2Quad Q9300 (this is the bottom model of current lineup) and Core2Extreme QX9650 (the top model of current lineup). We have experimented with QX9650, bringing down its multiplier so we got whole palette of Core2Quad processors from Q9x50 generation. To make evaluation of performances we have included in test even Core2Extreme QX6850 which is the top model Quad CPU from previous generation (65nm). ...

PEAK Radeon HD 3850 & HD 3870 PDF Print

ImageIf you are asking yourself, “Who is Peak?” we completely understand you.  But, we also want to drive away all your suspicions. Peak is coming from Taiwan and will soon have fifth anniversary. In the past, this manufacturer has been focused on producing memory, mainly flash portable type like USB sticks, memory cards of various types etc.

Nowadays, this brand also covers graphic cards with NVIDIA chips and some models with ATI (AMD) R6XX. We have tested two models with R670 chip: Radeon HD3850 and Radeon HD3870, both with 512MB on board memory. PCB of these cards defers from referent model and they are almost identical. We’ll start with weaker model, which was a pleasant surprise.

Both cards came in identical, not so eye catching packaging. We’re talking about classic “Chinese” box design with poor bundle. In the package, you will find disk with drivers, basic cables and small manual, without bundled software. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing; we’ll just save the best for last. The card itself is well made but the red PCB with power unit could be a little better quality. On the other side cooler looks like Zalman models and it’s made completely from aluminum with ribs like the ones on Zalman VF700A1. There is plastic transparent fan on top of it, quite silent under load. Fan performance is just great and they have a lot in common with Zalman. By that, we mean that cooler keeps cold even a part of PCB. It circulate air through aluminum ribs and goes on above circuit board surface, where are located DDR3 memory chips signed by Samsung. Their response is on 1.1 ns with frequency of 1660MHz. 256-bit memory bus is the same for all Radeon HD 3850 resulting great memory bandwidth. That means quite a lot to hard core gamers, who prefer to play new games. However, we have one small objection – nonexistence of memory heat spreaders. Their presence would improve card overclocking performance, but this is something that can be corrected. You can simply buy memory heat spreaders later on and stick them on the chips. That way, you can improve functionality and also aesthetics. Performance of this card is not that much different from other brand models and they are just great. Overcklocking possibilities are acceptable even without memory heat spreader, so the final result is 770MHz for core and 1920 MHz for memory. This core clock is a bit higher than for HD 3870, and with same memory size it is clear that performances of HD 3850 can easily catch up stronger “brother” while overclocked.  HD 3870 has DDR4 memory with higher clocks than HD 3850’s DDR3 memory. But, DDR4 memory also have higher latencies on higher clocks, so it have a similar performance as DDR3 memory on lower clocks, meaning that Peak Radeon HD 3850 512MB is very worthwhile.
