Page 1 of 7 Nvidia has been bringing new models out onto the market quite seriously lately, and the same thing can be said about ATI as well. Although both companies are more or less aware that previous models were not really wallet-friendly, the retaken exam simply had to be passed. To make the entire issue more interesting, while there were significant “holes” in pricing before, it is quite the opposite now.
A year ago, we had 8600GTS and 8800GTS 320 MB on the very edges of their respective price categories, with a gap of almost 100€ in between. However, the introduction of 8800GT created chaos and confusion into the concept and classification of Nvidia cards. This card offered gamers fantastic performance for merely 200€, which was much lower than the price of its competitors (in terms of performance). Also, the new chip was named G92, which further confused everyone, since everyone expected a new generation of cards (the 9 series) to carry it, but this didn't happen. Not too long after 8800GT, the strongest G92-based card appeared on the market – 8800GTS 512 MB, which was, paradoxically, drastically different in architecture compared to previous 8800GTS cards. Just a little later, we received the 8800GS 384 MB. This was a card clearly put out to compete with lower-end ATI products while the mid-range 9 series card is being prepared. This is where complete chaos is unleashed! Now that the 9600GT has appeared to take its place as the ultimate mid-range card, 8800GS is in a stalemate. It was introduced too recently to be withdrawn from the market, one can buy a 8800GT for only 30€ more, there is a non-standard 8800GT with 256 MB RAM which costs just the same as 8800GS, and finally, now we have the 9600GT which has around the same price tag and has just arrived to the party. If absolutely nothing is clear to you after this introduction, you understand the situation correctly. This kind of mess, price collision and general chaos have never been present in Nvidia lines. However, we are here to deal with the newborn, the 9600GT 512 MB, which is the star of this test, and this entire complicated introduction was necessary to familiarise you with the circumstances in which the card appears.
