Page 2 of 13 The chip, which was obviously tremendously carefully designed, represents the very top of what AMD has to offer in its DirectX 10, Shader Model 4.0 compatible family. The R600 was manufactured in the 80 nm process, packing an incredible 700 million transistors within. It goes without saying that such a chip has to have a large “die-size”, i.e. the size of the surface of the chip. The core is clocked at an impressive 742 MHz, but do not yet compare that info with the G80 chip. While the G80's stream processors work at a clock twice that of the core, the R600 has it synchronised – the core clock is always the stream processors' clock.
Talking of stream processors, the R600 has a lot more of them than the G80. Believe it or not, herein lie 320 SPs divided into 64 blocks; every block contains 5 SPs. Besides that, also supported are: 128-bit HDR, 24x (custom filter) AntiAliasing and textures of up to 8192x8192.
Also, R600 possesses 16 TMU units and the same number of Render Back End units split into 4 blocks. Also notable is the HD Video decoder for formats such as H264, AVC and VC1, with a couple of HDCP keys integrated, along with an audio controller which enables the sound signal to be transported directly from the sound card through the HDMI output.
Although the picture shows no HDMI port, a DVI-to-HDMI converter comes supplied with every card, so there is no need to worry. The derivatives of R600 are called R610 and R630, and will be used for the HD 2600 and HD 2400 series, respectively. They are manufactured in the 65 nm process, and based on exactly the same architecture with the same abilities, but with a weaker performance. The specs chart will tell you exactly how much weaker.
