Page 1 of 6 When ATI/AMD presented new generation of graphics cards based on RV770 chip, first model was Radeon HD 4850. This model, despite few problems, became mega popular when it comes to HD 4XXX series of graphics cards that now consists out of so many models. Although it was first presented, Radeon HD 4850 was far from top-performance model. Nevertheless even today its sale rates are high because its main advantage was price. For relatively small amount of currency you will get GPU with 800 stream processors (Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3) that is enough to run all new games.
Maybe you cannot play Crysis in native resolution of your monitor but then again, this game has set standards too high. Problems that HD 4850 had were mostly consequence of single-slot cooling solution that was used and that looked, from day one, that it was mounted because someone said that single-slot cooler should be mounted without taking into account what engineers said. Of course, other manufacturers recognized this problem and almost all of them used custom cooling solution on their HD 4850 models. Because of this referent ATI/AMD models are the cheapest ones on the market (around 120€) while models with custom cooling solutions are slightly pricier (around 135€). Even with custom cooler HD 4850 is best choice in its class but it seems that this will change. Unexpected twist in this story is that its main adversary comes from the same team. ATI presented first GPU made in 40nm manufacturing process with idea to test new manufacturing process and see what effects it will have on the market. Of course we are talking about new Radeon HD 4770. Its purpose is to place itself just below Radeon HD 4850 in current product line-up. Important fact it that projected price of HD 4770 should be for 20% lower than HD 4850 (around 100€) but the interesting detail is that this new graphics card should be just 3-4% slower than HD 4850.
