Finally we got our hands on smartphone that created quite a stir on a PDA market. This is one of those devices that is very interesting in many ways and looks great at the same time. Samsung Omnia HD, or i8910 HD, is larger and heavier than most other smartphones, which isn’t a flaw in any way. Omnia HD is very compact and rugged device with metal frame that contains usual buttons (photo and video recording, volume rocker-control, lock button etc) and three usual buttons on the front side.
| Capacitive Touchscreen |
| Capacitive touchscreen, used in Samsung Omnia HD, functions thanks to static electricity properties of human body. By touching a screen surface (sensor) electric field is changed and this change is registered as change in magnetic capacitivity of the screen. Screen is coated with very thin transparent layer of metal that can conduct electricity. Row of electrodes is placed around screen and those create low voltage field over conductive layer. When finger touches screen, area where the contact is made creates electricity and power drop is registered. Electric power that flows from each corner is proportional to distance where contact with finger is made so position and character of contact can be precisely determined. Capacitive touchscreens can be found, among others, in Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, HTC G1, LG KM900 and many other devices. Beside these capacitive touchscreens can be also found in ATM (bancomat) and other publicly available screen devices. |
When it comes to touch screen devices it is very important that screen functions perfectly and in case of Omnia HD it functions more than satisfactory. There is even feedback in form of short vibration that simulates click. Touch screen is very impressive, scratch resistant, with nicely saturated colors and above all, large diagonal: 3.7inch in 16:9 ratio. Because of these properties watching movies on Omnia HD is very pleasant experience. Picture will automatically rotate as you rotate device, except in case when you’re watching a wide screen movie, thanks to present accelerometer. The reason why Samsung put an HD suffix to this smartphone name is ability to record video in HD 720p resolution. Device itself cannot reproduce HD video since resolution of the screen is “only” 640x360 but it doesn’t mean that videos recoded with this phone or movies don’t look astonishing when played on Samsung Omnia HD. Samsung also provided Omnia HD with great photo camera of 8MP (3264x2448) that has autofocus, LED flash, picture stabilization, face detection, smile detection, blinking detection and few more integrated technologies.
If you came under the impression that Samsung Omnia HD is simply another great multimedia smarthphone on the market let us assure you that it is much more than that. The fact is that Samsung Omnia HD offers great picture and sound experience, but it also packs a lot of other smartphone functions: internet browser, e-mail client, Office Suite, GPS, PDF reader, and one of the very useful applications for all business users: Smart Reader that can scan (photograph) visit cards and store data in contacts. OCR routine functions very good, especially in nicely lighted conditions. Besides all this there is support for 3G and WiFi.
Conclusion
After all this we can only state that Samsung with Omnia HD created new standards when it comes to smartphones and PDA’s. This “phone” does everything that is expected from him to do and more than that: it does it fast and reliable. Only problem that we noticed is surface of the screen that will, most of the time, look smudged because it is, for some reason, very hard to keep it clean and shiny. Beside this problem, and problem with price tag (you didn’t expect that this device came cheap, didn’t you?) from around 600€, we have only praises for Samsung Omnia HD.
