Page 1 of 2 Samsung Jet was presented in Jun this year and now, it has arrived in our test lab. First detail that anyone will notice is its significantly lower price tag compared to similar models on the market. There is also very fast Qualcomm MSM6246 at 800MHz CPU that allows very comfortable user experience. Although Samsung marketed this smartphone as “smarter than smartphone”, we did notice few problems during test period.
Compared to similar Samsung smartphones, Jet is smaller and much easier to be operated with one hand. In such small package Samsung packed all features that advanced user might need, including 3.5mm audio connector, great camera and perfect display. That small 3.1-inch AMOLED display with 480x800 resolution and 16 million-color palette is detail that Samsung smartphones separates from the rest of the pack. Every picture on this display looks magnificent with great colors and exceptional sharpness.
Exterior impression of Jet is somewhat less impressive compared to, for example, Samsung Omnia HD but, then again, Jet is significantly cheaper than Omnia HD, so it can be justified Samsung move. Manufacturer managed to provide easy mechanism for opening back panel and made access GSM or microSD card trouble-free. In addition, unlocking is also made easier which isn’t good news, since device can unlock itself in a pocket (using side button or touch on a screen).
Biggest problem with Samsung Jet that we got during testing period was intractableness of the touch screen. We were assured by local Samsung representative that these problems will be corrected on final retail product (since we got sample this time). What was the problem? Sometimes, we needed to press touch screen more than once to read arrived message or some other notification for example. In most of the other scenarios we didn’t experienced any problems (menus, virtual QWERTY keyboard in landscape position etc).
Since this is Samsung smartphone, it is logical that is uses TouchWiz user interface which is rather nice and very user friendly. This means that main (home) screen consists of three screens that can be changed by swiping with finger from left to right (and vice versa). Each of these three screens can have its own widgets, so one of these can be “business” (with calendar and clock), other “personal” (with facebook and Youtube widget) while third can be “media” screen, for example. Widgets are stored in vertical list on the left side of the screen, so you can access them at any time and add or remove any widget from screen.
If Samsung named this model Jet because of its shear speed than they got it right. Whatever you do to this phone and how many application you run, it will always operate without any problems or even hint of slow ups. When you open main menu you will be welcomed by a lot of applications, but some of them, like messaging, keyboard, contacts and back function are always there in the bottom of the screen. Of course, all these applications are divided into 3 screens, just like home screen. Web browser allows easy and comfortable surfing since it supports zoom. Connectivity is also very simple, so access to Wireless networks or Bluetooth devices is simple and fast. Multimedia aspect is, as it is on all Samsung smartphones, flawless and almost brought to perfection. First of all, there is that great display. Secondly, there are good speakers included with this phone, so watching movies can be very pleasant experience. Samsung Jet comes with 2GB of memory, which can be expanded up to 16GB with memory card.
