Home screen is redesigned so now there are 6 icons in bottom that can be used for frequently used applications that can be customized. Email and Browser application are unchanged but there is preinstalled Documents To Go application that can open Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents even in newest Office 2007 formats. Displayed files are automatically converted. Excel files are in this process changed the most so you cannot expect 100% accuracy in displayed documents but these are still very usable in every day work. Bold has also support for PDF files and pictures so you shouldn’t have problems with opening attachments in e-mails.

Thanks to very fast Tavor CPU everything is happening almost instantaneous so moments when you will see hourglass will be rare. In the past CPU was part of the Intel family but now it is product of Marvell. This CPU at 624MHz shows all its possibilities in multimedia reproduction and we managed to overload it only when we started 14 applications at the same time. We started video file reproduction, two internet browsers, MSN messenger and GTalk IM, GPS application, Word with loaded DOC file, PDF document, e-mail client with opened mail with picture attached to it and some other applications. CPU power of this device is immense so you will very soon realize that leaving applications active (not shutting them down) is faster and more comfortable than starting and shutting down applications that you use on daily bases. BlackBerry Bold has 128Mb of Flash memory and 1Gb of internal additional memory. Additional microSD card can be inserted to achieve greater capacities that can go up to 16Gb and that is a lot of movies and music.

Bold dominates also in area of wireless connectivity. There is, of course, Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo profile for earphones (A2DP), than support for WiFi (a, b, g) and 3G. When using 3G connection all data is sent to your device in compressed/converted mode so there are no big differences in surfing 3G of WiFi mode but it is noticeable that surfing with WiFi connection is little bit faster. Section for connection control is nicely organized. Bluetooth can be set not to be visible to other devices so viruses that spread this way cannot get to your device. In this section you can set some WiFi connections that are preferable, the way IP is set for connections, devices for Bluetooth pairing and many more. For wired connection USB 2.0 is used with speeds around 3-4 MB/s when operations with internal memory and faster when operations with microSD card but this speeds depend on memory card itself. Maximal speed that we achieved was 7MB/s for writing and 17MB/s for reading.

Bold has also GPS module that is functioning very good. Satellite locking is fast and initial location is determined almost at the same moment. We tried Google Maps and Live Search. Google Maps worked but only in photo mode while Microsoft Live Search worked like a charm (surprisingly). Problem with GPS that work over the internet is slightly bigger bill at the end of the month. We also tried Garmin software with support for Bold. Trial version is free and can be used for seven days and in that period it is fully functional. If you are satisfied you can always buy full license.

Important and frequently used functions for business people aren’t changed much compared to earlier models. There is E-mail client with support for up to 10 accounts, Internet browser that can be upgraded with Opera Mini, IM applications like MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger and Google Talk. Unfortunately flash isn’t supported by any internet browser (but that can be changed in near future). Focus of this device is providing user-friendly environment for all daily tasks. For example: it is enough to enter e-mail address and password and in most cases you will be able to access your mail. In case you need to setup additional ports, servers and options you can but in most cases that won’t be necessary. If you have your contacts in other phone based on Windows Mobile platform you can import them directly thanks to Desktop Manager application. If you have phone based on some of the other platforms (Symbian for example) our advice is to synchronize contacts with Outlook first and then with Bold. If you are not used to synchronize Bold with your desktop computer you can synchronize it with Google Calendar thanks to presence of Google Sync application. Then you can synchronize Outlook and Google Calendar if you want.
