MSI Wind U100

Category of small cheap notebooks became very popular and there is no wonder why most of big brands want a piece of cake for themselves. But Asus got all of them off-guard. Because of that we’ve been waiting rather long for Eee’s true rival . We’ve already mentioned MSI’s agility which allowed them again to be first with new product on market. Their trump card wears name Wind and model that InsideHW had tested is MSI Wind U100. ...

Puma Platform for Notebooks

The long waited AMD platform for notebooks under the name PUMA is finally introduced and InsideHW had a chance to test notebook based on this platform. To all users that have been waiting cheap integrated graphics with good performances, time has come. Intel Centrino was so far “untouchable” in field of portable computers but AMD Puma, by all appearance, got a necessary quality to fight for highest position. ...

Prestigio Data Safe II Fashion Edition

USB hard disks lately become very popular. This especially goes for 2.5’’models. The reasons for that can be found in their usefulness and practicality. Yet, we are living in times when it is necessary to transfer huge amounts of data from place to place. At first, manufacturers on market fought with larger and larger capacity of these devices. Lately, when capacity stopped being key factor, manufacturers turned to HDD case design. On that field, Prestigio went step ahead of its competitors and launched Prestigio data Safe II Fashion Edition. ...

ATI 48xx Architecture

At the end of June, in Spain, we were introduced to a new series of 48xx graphics cards from ATI. We saw then only RV770PRO (4850) but at this moment 4870 (RV770XT) is also available. Even though our sources from AMD didn’t unveil why 4870 wasn’t shown on launching, we assume that some problems with quantities of available GDDR5 memory occurred. Considering that 4850 uses GDDR3 memory, it is no surprise that many retailers had them on stock. ATI 4870 will be sold, in beginning, exclusively with GDDR5 memory (this is the first graphics card that uses this memory) but AMD leaves a possibility that some innovative partner might launch later version that uses GDDR3 memory. ...

Sapphire HD 4850

It’s rare occasion to have on test, on the same month, new generation products from two big rivals (nVIDIA and ATI). This is really good news because ATI had some serious delays with R600 and that is one of reasons why it was so indifferently received on market. ATI realized that now must roll up its sleeves to catch up nVIDIA, because at that point seemed that nVIDIA unreachably moved away. ...

ImagePeople from Canyon Company have a sense for increasing demands for brand configurations and result is Canyon CNR-PC1.
Configuration varies regard to region, so you can take a look what model is available for your region HERE .

First thing you’ll spot, will be for sure very attractive design.  We are talking about presence of white and orange color combination on every component, from web camera, mouse and keyboard to case and display. We should mention that only one thing is missing – speakers, but you can buy them as addition. In spite of that fact, Canyon CNR-PC1 design leaves us speechless and that is something what will appreciate younger users. This exact model is intended for home and office users.

Configuration is based on AMD platform with Nvidia graphics card. Components’ quality and selection are, mainly at appropriate level. Let’s start from beginning.

Besides AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (2.2GHz) CPU at Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 motherboard, there are present only two memory slots, which are in this case filled with 1GB RAM in dual-channel mode(at 667MHz). This could be a problem if you want to upgrade your memory, because you will need to replace one or both memory modules. Two extra PCI and one PCI-Ex1 slots are sufficient for connecting additional devices. Although motherboard has integrated graphical solution (GeForce 6100), Canyon has decided to use passively cooled Gigabyte video card. It is little bit older GeForce 7300GT which cannot be used for playing new games and that is the reason why this configuration is mainly suitable for office usage. Optical device and HDD (using SATA connection) are made by Samsung which already closely collaborates with Canyon at flash disk and web camera market for a long time. Optical drive and HDD are the best you can find on the market. 350W power supply unit comes from Codegen and it is more than sufficient for this configuration.

Provided keyboard is slim type and creates a feeling of notebook keyboard. Quality is very good and there is now bending while using it. Supplied optical mouse is little bit smaller than standard ones. Web camera has a clip for monitor mounting and it has solid picture quality. By our opinion mouse, keyboard and web camera are not in same quality range as rest of the configuration but Canyon needed to make some difficult choices to achieve this price tag.

One of the highlights of Canyon CNR-PC1 is BenQ monitor. It is 19” wide model with maximum resolution of 1440x900px and 5ms response time. This monitor will satisfy movie lovers and even gamers (gamers should upgrade graphics card to be able to play games in monitors native resolution). Monitor has DVI and D-Sub (VGA) connectors.
It is important to emphasize a fact that for the price for this configuration you get Windows Vista Home Premium. Canyon CNR-PC1 is almost silent when powered on thanks only to two fans. It is possible to install one 80mm and one 120mm fan in case. Performance of this well built configuration is as expected and we will not analyze it further. Only “flaw” is lack of memory, but since the price of DDR2 memory is very low it can be corrected easily.
