This time in our test lab arrived new member of HAF (High Air Flow) family: 922 model. Design, target user group and idea are the same as for its older brother HAF 932 except this is mid tower chassis. Chassis is made out of steel and plastics with mash front grill. Exterior is black with front mask that is dominated by “silver” Cooler Master logo.
At the top of the front side are located audio, eSATA and two 2.0 USB connectors. Front side can be “filled” with five 5.25inch drives where one of those can be converted to 3.5inch drive bay thanks to supplied converter. Power and HDD LEDs are located at the top of the front side. Right behind those, on top side, are placed power and reset buttons. Left button is used to disable LEDs in fans located behind front grill.
Mentioned fan has 200mm in diameter, and operates at 700RPM. This fan efficiently cools down hard drive cage, and if you want, you can mount 140 or even 120mm fan instead of original. Hard drive cage has 5 bays that are more than enough. HDD cage is rotated for 90 degrees so cables can be neatly packed (cable management) along right side of the chassis. Mounting hard drives into HDD cage can be done without use of any tools thanks to plastic rails, while hard drives will sit on rubber pads that absorb vibrations which results in lower noise levels.
Motherboard mounting plate has hole that allows easier CPU cooler changes (easier access to CPU cooler backplate). At the top there is fan that blows out the hot air. This is also 200mm fan at 700RPM. This fan can be replaced by two 120mm fans or, Aquagate MAX . At the top of the back side are holes for custom water cooling systems. Below those holes at back side is located another fan: 120mm at 1200RPM that, also, blows hot air out of the chassis.
Power supply unit, similar to HAF 932 model, is mounted at the bottom of the chassis with enough space behind motherboard plate for power cables.
Metal plate below power supply unit is perforated which allows PSU to operate without a hitch. If your power supply unit is not too long, another 120mm or 140mm fan can be mounted on bottom side.
Additional fans can be mounted on left side: one 200mm or two 120mm fans. Inside this “little boy”, thanks to numerous fans, can, indeed, get drafty. These are good news for all overclockers that found HAF932 to be too big. Another nice detail are 3-pin connector on each fan which allows fan rotation speed control. This can be important for users that do care about noise levels generated by their rig. We did found that noise levels are a bit high for our taste, so we tweaked a little bit their speeds. Back fan from 1200RPM was dropped at 1100RPM when it became almost silent. 200mm fan behind front grill was left at 700RPM, while top fan was dropped at 500RPM. With fans set at this manner, almost no noise was generated by chassis itself.
Conclusion
All in all, we are very satisfied with Cooler Master HAF922. You either like its design or dislike it, because there’s no accounting for taste. This is not traditionally designed chassis, but there is no doubt that users that do like its looks with be more than satisfied with its overall quality.
