AMD recently announced extension of its Black Edition processor lineup and as result dual cores K8 will be replaced with dual core and triple core K10 processors from 6000 and 8000 series. We got exclusive sample on test from AMD no more or less but triple core K10 from 8750 series with clock at 2.4GHz. Of course that we are talking about B3 revision made in 65nm technology process that keeps getting better and better thanks to recently introduced SB750 southbridge – chipset. SB750 has possibility of calibrating signal clock which allows free overclock for processors based on K10 cores for clocks higher than 3.2GHz.
Unlocked Power
8750 Black Edition comes with completely unlocked multiplicator as for core multiplier as for multiplier of integrated northbridge. So, thanks to possibility of independent overclock of memory controller, better memory performances are achievable and therefore raised FPS in games or you could independently overclock every core from Windows. For these actions we used newest AMD Overdrive Utility which has beside possibility of core manipulations, great possibilities for settings voltage for memory, processor and northbridge. AOD utility has also support options for adjusting clock signal for each core separately or all cores at same time.
When you set these options and after system restarts, ACC settings stay registered in BIOS. As curiosity may be the fact that we set first core at 3.6GHz and with these settings we run SuperPI benchmark.
Overclocking
Considering that our Black Edition is unlocked processor sample, it’s easy to achieve overclock with simple multiplier change from BIOS. Tested sample worked stable and with no problems on 1.325V at 3.2GHz clock. For stabile 3.3GHz it needed 1.395V while for 3.4GHz it’s necessary to include high quality air or water cooling and voltage at reasonably high 1.475V. During tests Northbridge functioned at excellent 2.4GHz.
We had opportunity to test yet one more sample from same processor’s series and we can say with certainty that these two were very similar but with one difference – we couldn’t reach 2.4GHz for northbridge on second sample. This processor is possible to overclock also by raising HTT link but that’s far more complicated operation and requires very flexible motherboard that won’t become unstable on higher bus values. With Black Edition you will be able to achieve excellent results, stabile overclock and you could regulate memory speed with slight lifting of frequency for HTT link.
