Toshiba Computer Systems Division announced the integration of Toshiba’s recently unveiled high capacity 2.5’’ solid state drive (SSD) into its flagship laptop, the Portégé R600. The new SSD offers a capacity of 512 GB, making the Portégé R600 the first laptop in the world that offers a solid state drive of this capacity. The latest Portégé R600 will be available in the second quarter of 2009 in selected markets in Europe.

“The innovative light-weight high capacity SSD perfectly fits with our Portégé R600. This remains the world’s lightest fully equipped laptop since we launched it some months ago and is the ultimate laptop for style conscious professionals and consumers who want an ultra mobile computing solution without compromising on functionality,” says Thomas Teckentrup, general manager at Toshiba Computer Systems Division, Europe. “With this ‘world first’, Toshiba further showcases its strength in innovation and its leading technology role in the laptop market.”

The 2.5’’ SSD provides a high level of endurance and performance. The 512GB offers lower power consumption and reads and writes data faster, in comparison with a hard disk drive. The Portégé R600 offers an extended battery life of up to 9.5 hours. It has an Intel Centrino 2 CPU and a 12.1’’ transflective LED backlit display offering crystal clear visibility both indoors and outdoors. Further features include an embedded Mobile Broadband module producing data rates of up to 7.2 Mbps, WLAN and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. The Portégé R600 also provides a rich set of advanced EasyGuard features ensuring security, durability and manageability. This includes a spill resistant keyboard, shock protected design, fingerprint reader and remote management possibilities.

An optional 7mm integrated ODD is available at an additional weight of just 75g, ensuring that even with this, the Portégé R600 remains the lightest laptop on the market2.

According to Toshiba the new, Toshiba-developed 512GB SSD employs a 2-bit-per-cell multi-level NAND flash memory at the 43nm process generation to realize, the world’s largest capacity SSD with a density approx. 4 times that of the SSD integrated in the currently available Portégé R600 integrating a 128 GB SSD. Furthermore, a newly developed controller that realizes high-speed parallel processing with the multi-level NAND flash memory allows the new SSD to cut power consumption by approx. 50% and boost data access speeds to approx. 200%) for read (max. 230MB per sec) and 150%) for write (max.180MB per sec), compared to a hard disc drive (HDD)).
