According to data supplied by iSupply, despite great advancements made by Acer, who took the number 2 spot in the PC market in Q3 and Q4 of last year, for the full 2009, Dell can still claim second place. The results for the whole of 2009 show that Dell shipped 38,959,000 computers, while Acer managed to sell 38,485,00. Acer's performance is due to a 21% increase in shipments over 2008, this being the highest growth of all Top 5 vendors. In contrast, Dell fell 9.9% compared to 2008.
However, Acer's 2009 success was driven by the notebook PC market. Notebooks accounted for nearly 80 percent of Acer's shipments in 2009. This allowed the company to capitalize on the fast-growing mobile-computing segment while limiting its exposure to the moribund desktop segment. As you mighte expect, in 2009 HP was top dogg with sales reaching 59,620,000 units, while behind Dell and Acer there were Lenovo (24.8 million units) and Toshiba (15.4 million). Overall, the 2009 PC market went up 1% over 2008 and topped 302,339,000 units.
