AMD Radeon R9 290: Affordable Hawaii

AMD’s announcement of Radeon R9 290X made a really good impression on the public. Most of excitement wasn’t due to performance, which is great, nor due to acoustic and thermal characteristic that aren’t really that good. So, what makes this card that popular? One very important thing that card manufacturers often tend to forget in their attempts to make them perform better. You guessed it – price. After a long while, the best model with one GPU has a starting price of less than 500 euros. AMD shocked the competition when they made this dramatic move. After that, AMD traditionally continued with slightly weaker Radeon R9 290 that lacks only X on the end. However, is it that big of a deal?

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti: Game of Thrones

When NVIDIA presented the GeForce Titan, users were offered an opportunity to get the fastest video card with one graphics chip, at an insane price of 1000 euros. At that moment, AMD didn’t have a correct response to this model, which in turn, justified GTX Titan’s presence on the market. Last month, Radeon R9 290X appeared which offered the same performances as titan at half the price. As a result, Titan’s presence on the market is meaningless and NVIDIA was forced to take drastic measures. In order to retain their position at the top of “single-GPU” cards, the company presented GeForce GTX 780 Ti this month. The new model is everything the Titan should have been and much more than just a polished GTX 780.
