New battle on GPU battlefield that started with launch of RV770 GPU and as consequence had price drops on both sides: greens (nVIDIA) and reds (ATi). Because of that we have a lot of different products in relatively small price range. Inevitable deformations occurred in product lineup creating situation where different products can have identical prices. All that confusion is worsened thanks to strange nVIDIA product markings and ATi’s stubbornness when it comes to removing of older models, that are replaced with new ones, from the market. In a attempt to make things clear to all our readers we applied different testing routine.

As announced, nVIDIA presented new GTX260 with larger amount of Stream Processors. This is consequence of the facts that regular GTX260 didn’t have expected performances levels and price was too high compared to similar products on the market. Simply put GTX260 was very fast but since Radeon HD 4870 had better performance/price ratio nVIDIA had to do something and as result we have GTX260+.

ATI continuously presents new models of graphics cards, using new GPU to the maximum and filling gaps in their product lineup. ATI solves every problem with simple solution that can be summarized something like this: What is better than HD 4850? Two HD 4850! Result is logical and now after Radeon HD 4870 X2 we got in our test lab HD 4850 X2 that should position in between HD 4870 and HD 4870 X2. Graphics card that we got is signed by Sapphire.

The fact is that nVIDIA these days lives on its reputation, considering that except for GTX280 and GTX260 (their place is reserved for the top of the current offer), nVIDIA doesn’t have anything new to show. Besides, trend of renaming the products becomes a bit irritating habit, cause real new product from “sub 250€” class isn’t introduced for a long time. G92 chip is still promoted even though it was “de facto” incredible product one year ago and that is for IT industry too long. Perhaps it wouldn’t feel that long if competition isn’t hyperactive, but as this became ATi’s new business policy, it’s quite evidently that nVIDIA isn’t held in high esteem.

The interesting thing is that we didn’t have up to now GTX260 graphics card on test, probably because majority is already more interested for more affordable products from latest nVIDIA generation of graphics cards even though it is consisted, for now, from two products in total. Anyway, we got one GTX260 for testing and it is signed by manufacturer that is worldwide known – MSI.

We must admit that in recent times we’ve unfairly neglected gamers with limited budget that don’t have many possibilities to set a certain sum aside for purchasing some graphics card from higher price range. Let’s face it, nor ATi nor nVIDIA were much better. From launching of GeForce 8600GTS and 8600GT and their price drop, nVIDIA did very little for this category of users. As “greens” are for some time occupied only with renaming of their products even these new low-cost graphics cards didn’t bring anything new, except for model GeForce 9600GT.

Launch of nVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 280 brought a huge enthusiasm in last two months, but it already begun to fade. The main “culprit” is ATi which showed to all of us that even when hard times come they are continuing with good work as if competition isn't a problem and as confirmation of their efforts we got incredible new generation of graphics cards. The whole story started with great Radeon HD 4850 and continued with HD 4870 that had GDDR5 memory. After great critics for these two GPUs, ATi was aware that they shouldn’t stop there, if they want to overthrown nVIDIA from the top performance throne. And they did it…

Radeon HD4800 series of graphics cards is real refreshment in these days. Every new generation of GPU brought a big shift in performances and ATi this time showed us that top model graphics chip (RV770) doesn’t have to be expensive. Based on experience from previous HD3850 and HD3870 models, we expected that new model HD4870 will dominate in middle-high class, with lower price and higher performances than other competitors. But, we were wrong… Tests showed something quite unexpected. Still, before benchmark results let’s see what new GPU offers.

At the end of June, in Spain, we were introduced to a new series of 48xx graphics cards from ATI. We saw then only RV770PRO (4850) but at this moment 4870 (RV770XT) is also available. Even though our sources from AMD didn’t unveil why 4870 wasn’t shown on launching, we assume that some problems with quantities of available GDDR5 memory occurred. Considering that 4850 uses GDDR3 memory, it is no surprise that many retailers had them on stock. ATI 4870 will be sold, in beginning, exclusively with GDDR5 memory (this is the first graphics card that uses this memory) but AMD leaves a possibility that some innovative partner might launch later version that uses GDDR3 memory.

It’s rare occasion to have on test, on the same month, new generation products from two big rivals (nVIDIA and ATI). This is really good news because ATI had some serious delays with R600 and that is one of reasons why it was so indifferently received on market. ATI realized that now must roll up its sleeves to catch up nVIDIA, because at that point seemed that nVIDIA unreachably moved away.
