Acer Aspire One becomes first Ion 2 netbook

ImageAcer broke its own ground by launching the first netbook using NVIDIA's Ion 2. The Aspire One 532g upgrades the 532h with a GeForce G 310M that provides full 1080p video and hardware-accelerated 3D but while saving power. It overcomes Intel's building graphics into the processor by making use of Optimus: the 532g can switch to Intel's slower graphics to save energy but the Ion 2 chipset when performance is more important.

Intel & Nokia merge Moblin & Maemo into single OS

ImageChipmaker Intel and cell phone manufacturer Nokia on Monday announced they will merge their respective Moblin and Maemo mobile device operating systems into a single OS. Dubbed MeeGo, the companies plan to have the Linux-based platform running a plethora of devices including smartphones, tablets, netbooks and in-car entertainment systems as well. MeeGo will be hosted by the Linux Foundation, and apps written for it will be available both through Nokia's Ovi Store and Intel's AppUp Center.

Windows Phone 7 lacks Flash and multitasking

ImageMicrosoft at Mobile World Congress officially launched Windows Phone 7 series, its first major overhaul of its mobile OS in at least five years but also a partial step back. The new platform uses a heavily Zune-influenced design and at the home screen centers on tiles: users can pin apps, contacts, playlists and other details to the home screen. It integrates not just the Zune media player (including Zune software sync) but also Xbox Live's achievements, avatars and friends.

LG to bring 15-inch OLED TV to US by mid-2010

ImageLG will bring its 15-inch OLED TV to the US by the middle of the year, company staff said at the Integrated Systems Europe show. Already available in Korea as the EL9500, the screen is the first production OLED TV to reach a true HD resolution, peaking at 720p (1366x768). The extremely high contrast of OLED gives the set "amazing" image quality, according to those at the show.

Sony rolls out first 3D-ready Blu-ray player

ImageSony launched its first 3D-ready Blu-ray player, known as the BDP-S470 for those of you who absolutely love memorizing gizmos by their official names. Technically, this model is not ready to display Blu-ray 3D content just yet, but it will be able to do so later this summer via a firmware upgrade, and it might be the same firmware which will enable the Sony PS3 to handle 3D playback over Blu-ray as well. Apart from that, Sony has also made known that its BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc model and the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home theater systems will be able to support Blu-ray 3D as well via their respective firmware updates this summer.

Sony & Microsoft reveal PSN & XBL numbers

Marvell produces 1GHz ARM chip with 1080p video decoder

ImageMobile devices chipmaker Marvell announced the release of the ARMADA 618 chip, a new processor meant for high-end smartphones. The new chip has an integrated encoder and decoder for both capturing and playing back 1080p videos, and also supplies relatively quick 3D graphics. The part runs at 1GHz and claims the industry's fastest LP-DDR memory, which should cut down on access times.

Garmin Asus release M10 with touchscreen

ImageThe Garmin-Asus M10, a full-touch, all-in-one smartphone powered by the latest version of Windows Mobile was released today. The M10 is expected to be available through carrier and retail channels in the first half of 2010. Benson Lin, Vice President and General Manager of ASUS' Personal Mobile Devices Business Unit, Handheld Business Group claimed that the Garmin-Asus M10 was the answer to people's need for work-life balance.

Opera Mini announced for iPhone

ImageiPhone will be getting a brand new browser known as Opera Mini, adding to the over 140,000 apps in the App Store catalog. This makes for an interesting bit of news since Apple has yet to approve a third-party browser, so it looks like a nice challenge is on both Opera’s and Apple’s hands.
