As perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) is expected to hit its physical density limit at about 1 Tb per square inch, Tom's hardware reports about new and innovative ways how a technology that is in its core more than 40 years old can get another extension. Heat assisted magnetic recording has been a long time favorite, but scientists have found another approach to reduce the space between magnetic dots on HDD platters and preventing them from impacting each other at the same time. At least in the lab, the technology uses a direct self assembly approach and would provide a five-fold increase of HDD storage density, breathing four to five more years of life into HDDs.

Logitech announced its plans to sell Harmony remotes division after a "disappointing" third quarter. The company posted an operating loss of $180 million for the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2013, a 14 percent decline over the same period last year. "As we articulated when we started the third quarter, continued weakness in the global PC market was the primary factor in our disappointing Q3 results," Logitech CEO Bracken P. Darrell said in a statement. "As a result, we have initiated the process to divest our remote controls and digital video security categories, and we plan to discontinue other non-strategic products, such as speaker docks and console gaming, by the end of calendar year 2013," he said. Logitech will focus ore on mobile computing, specifically tablets and smartphones.

The new video format is the successor to the H.264 codec, which nearly every video publisher has standardized after the release of the iPad and several other connected devices.

Rotating displays, touch-sensitive displays, tablet/notebook transformers… All of these were mere concepts a few years ago, yet they’re increasingly invading the store displays of today. Other than the Lenovo Yoga notebook, we’ve also been surprised by ASUS’ Taichi 21. Although the idea is the same, these two notebook models are actually quite different. While Yoga does its transformation from notebook to tablet by rotating the display by 360 degrees, ASUS has decided that Taichi should have two displays altogether.

Things are heating up for the upcoming launch of the BlackBerry 10. Latest buzz from the RIM is that there will be a big-budget ad during the upcoming Super Bowl. Unfortunately RIM hasn't released any teaser footage or even pictures of what we can expect. The mobile device maker made it clear that this announcement is meant more as a heads up to die-hard BlackBerry fans following the company via social media. Frank Boulben, RIM's chief marketing officer, went so far as to claim the company boasts a dedicated audience of 30 million "crackberry" addicts engaged with them across the social media diaspora.
