Improvements
One of things that have been waiting too long for improvements is the work in OpenGL. After settings that were available even in Photoshop CS4, documents can be smoothly zoomed thanks to implementation of OpenGL. Improvements during OpenGL rendering are actually responsible for neutralizing notched looks while document zooming is performed. Beside these esthetic novelties even complete work in OpenGL is in great deal perfected and users now have numerous new options that can affect on speed and work quality.
To Photoshop users that are more oriented on photography, are available some new functions like photo decomposition after photo shooting, effects fisheye lens and spherical panoramas, effect of getting bigger depth of field on photographs etc.
Especially is interesting work on decomposition of photograph because of new option Content Aware Scaling that is used for resizing certain parts of the photo. This option differs drastically from option Free Transform under several different items. We should mention that usage of this tool for enlarging some parts of photo will not result in lost details and their quality stays completely preserved. By using the CAS, can be achieved the same effects on all types of photos, layers and selections in all color modes (RGB, CMYK, Lab and Grayscale), except during work with Smart Objects, 3D or Video Layers. It is necessary to pay attention on two, maybe most important options that CAS offers: Skin Protection and Protect Drop Down Menu. With Skin Protection option can be preserved all areas on photo that we want to protect from influence of this tool, while with Protect Drop Down Menu function we select alpha channels that we want to protect from CAS action.
Effects Fisheye and Spherical Panoramas originate from previous version of this program, while in new Photoshop their development is continued through new options and functions. Some of interesting options are new distortion corrections applicable on geometric shapes. Also, additionally is improved option Photomerge. With this option now can be created 360° panoramas or automatically detected sources from which was used effect Fisheye lens. There is also option Collage for rotating, enlarging, shrinking or changing layout of our collages.
Depth of field effect can be achieved by combining two or more different photographs with same scene but different focus points. This effect can be attained by choosing different photo sharpness that we use and also by color correction on these pictures. Certain corrections and improvements are made for Smart Object too. The biggest and probably the longest waited correction considers the better transformations of Smart Object especially when you want to gain perspective effect. Photoshop CS4 also offers improved possibility of working with linked masked layers.
One of most attractive novelties is 3D Editing and Compositing tool. Work with 3D objects or models is extremely simple and, what’s more important, results can be viewed in real time. With this tool you can editing some of important parameters connected with 3D objects like: lights, materials or cameras, and all that thanks to new ray-tracing engine as support for work with 3D objects or models. Certain changes are made even for video materials. Photoshop CS4 works much easier with “non-square” pixels and shift is noticeable also for: 3D object animations, position control for cameras on scene, new options for adjusting rendering etc.
We must mention one more new function, Volume Rendering. With this tool, all users that are working with video, now have possibility to convert text, different shapes or photos into 3D shapes that can be seen from different angles.

Conclusion
General impression is that we expected more from Photoshop CS4. Offered novelties deserve praises for sure but we still think that Adobe rushed with launching of new Photoshop version. Anyway, we are aware of fact that every version cannot be that pompous and grandiose like some previous versions were in their own time, but we do think that new Photoshop CS4 will be embraced by graphics professionals as fast as previous versions.
