For quite some time, ˝yuppies˝ have been trying to make upper part of hard disk transparent, but they failed. The first problem is sensitivity of disk interior, which cannot tolerate any particle of dust. It is clearer to you if you know that magnet head bearers are rotating with 10.000 turns per minute rotations per minute, and preciseness of motion is two thousand part of average human hair thickness. In order to solve this problem it is necessary to have super-clean environment, within which mounting would be performed, and it is something that no one can provide.
Another problem is selection of material for manufacturing transparent side of hard disk. Beside apparent visual transparent feature, material would have to tolerate vibrations, as well as large quantity of heat emitted during operation of one such speed disk. This material should own quality of isolator in order of preventing electrostatic discharge which may damage data on it. Requirements of production in larger quantities caused choice for material to be crystallized plastic. In order to prevent electrostatic discharge, antistatic paint was put onto all surfaces. As connecting material with remaining part of disk was used foam glue, since one of its properties is good sealing of openings (preventing dust to penetrate), forming stiff connection with remaining part of disk, preventing occurring of undesired vibrations. Level of demanding effort for development of this process is shown in the fact that production of this solution lasted for several years.
Of course, final product has been subjected to rigorous tests, resulting in hard disk with exactly the same performances as in older brother without windows, which is also has warranty period of 5 years. Of course, it is much more important to sleep like a baby knowing your data are safe on disk.
