MSI Wind U100

Category of small cheap notebooks became very popular and there is no wonder why most of big brands want a piece of cake for themselves. But Asus got all of them off-guard. Because of that we’ve been waiting rather long for Eee’s true rival . We’ve already mentioned MSI’s agility which allowed them again to be first with new product on market. Their trump card wears name Wind and model that InsideHW had tested is MSI Wind U100. ...

Puma Platform for Notebooks

The long waited AMD platform for notebooks under the name PUMA is finally introduced and InsideHW had a chance to test notebook based on this platform. To all users that have been waiting cheap integrated graphics with good performances, time has come. Intel Centrino was so far “untouchable” in field of portable computers but AMD Puma, by all appearance, got a necessary quality to fight for highest position. ...

Prestigio Data Safe II Fashion Edition

USB hard disks lately become very popular. This especially goes for 2.5’’models. The reasons for that can be found in their usefulness and practicality. Yet, we are living in times when it is necessary to transfer huge amounts of data from place to place. At first, manufacturers on market fought with larger and larger capacity of these devices. Lately, when capacity stopped being key factor, manufacturers turned to HDD case design. On that field, Prestigio went step ahead of its competitors and launched Prestigio data Safe II Fashion Edition. ...

ATI 48xx Architecture

At the end of June, in Spain, we were introduced to a new series of 48xx graphics cards from ATI. We saw then only RV770PRO (4850) but at this moment 4870 (RV770XT) is also available. Even though our sources from AMD didn’t unveil why 4870 wasn’t shown on launching, we assume that some problems with quantities of available GDDR5 memory occurred. Considering that 4850 uses GDDR3 memory, it is no surprise that many retailers had them on stock. ATI 4870 will be sold, in beginning, exclusively with GDDR5 memory (this is the first graphics card that uses this memory) but AMD leaves a possibility that some innovative partner might launch later version that uses GDDR3 memory. ...

Sapphire HD 4850

It’s rare occasion to have on test, on the same month, new generation products from two big rivals (nVIDIA and ATI). This is really good news because ATI had some serious delays with R600 and that is one of reasons why it was so indifferently received on market. ATI realized that now must roll up its sleeves to catch up nVIDIA, because at that point seemed that nVIDIA unreachably moved away. ...

WD MyBook 500GB & Freecom 400GB PDF Print

The trend we have been witnessing for last couple of months, regarding widening of offer for „Personal Storage“ systems, i.e. big external hard disks, seems not to abate. One month after another new models are arriving into our market. Big, 3.5” hard drives with external powering are designed for target group with need for special ˝accommodation space˝ for its music, movies and images. Those are people who want to have them always in reach of their hands, and do not want to juggle with bunch of DVDs and to burn their data on them. Two products which we are about to present in the following lines are designed for them.

WD´s My Book has enormous 500 GB capacity. Inside of stylish, pleasant black casing, standard WD hard disk runs at 7.200 rotations per minute and has 16 MB of cache memory. MyBook supports so-called dual interface, meaning that for connection with computer could be used USB 2.0 or FireWire 1394a connection. To make this product more interesting, MyBook has capacity usage indicator and package of additional software which should be used for easier search of files on disk, as well as for automatic data backup. Still, practical application of this software is rather poor, so primary characteristic of MyBook is big 500 GB capacity and average transfer rate of 20 MB/s.

Other device comes from Freecom company, whose models of external disks we were able to test in several occasion earlier. It is standard (again WD) disk, speed 7.200 rotations per minute with 8 MB of cache memory. In our test version, the capacity was 400 GB. Additional supply through adapter, given in package is necessary, and primary connection with computer is realized through USB 2.0 port. However, beside this type of connecting, this device has LAN connector. Due to implemented NDAS (Network Direct Attached Storage) technology, it is possible to connect this device directly to HUB, and after installation of given software, to all computers connected in local network, when all of them are able to freely access to this hard disk.

Special detail is that this disk does not have its IP address, meaning it is impossible for someone from outside (through Internet or in any other way) access to data on this disk,  while with local computers this disk will be recognized as local. Sole deficiency of this Freecom model is usage of out-of-date 100 Mbit standards, meaning that data transfer will be rather slower in moment when several computers make attempt to access data. Still, even with this deficiency, this device is an excellent solution for expanding memory capacities of local network, without making interventions on server.
