By emulating much more serious players in the world of DDR2 memory, Apacer decided to introduce their 2x1GB PC2 8500 modules. Full name of this memory is Apacer Overclocking DRAM modules. Color is the first thing we notice, then cooler’s size on a memory. Only Corsair with its Dominator modules has slightly larger heat spreaders. One might say it is more matter of an esthetics, than objective need. Otherwise, these modules, as it is possible to read on attractive package, are chosen as official memory modules on WCG player’s tournament.
Memory is certified for speed of 1066 MHz with CAS 5-5-5-15 latencies. According to Apacer, required voltage necessary for stable operation on preset speed is 2.2V. Since we accidentally set up the value of 2.1V in BIOS, and did not notice mistake until later, we came to the conclusion that more than 2.1V is not necessary for 100% stable operation of memory. Let us make one thing clear right away, every set up lower than 2.1V (2.05V, 2.0V) led our Asus P5B Deluxe board refusing to boot itself on 1066 MHz. ProMOS chips are only one placed on memory, causing maximal possible stable overclock insignificantly larger than set speed values. Stable memory operation is on 1120 MHz 5-6-6-18 on 2.4V.
Earlier we explained you that asynchronous operation of memory and processor do not contribute significantly. Reminder: we left processor on nominal value, and overclocked memory. This time we had slightly different approach, therefore you should look at the performance results. As you may see, stretching memory timings up to their maximum on different frequencies and voltage was not the very best... meaning, we have seen both, better and worse. Regarding ProMOS chips, it can be said that it is excellent.
| Memory | DDR2-800 | DDR2-1066 | DDR2-1120 | | Voltage | 2.1V | 2.1V | 2.4V | | Timings by SPD ( Tcl Trcd Trp Tras ) | 5-5-5-12 | 5-5-5-15 | 6-6-6-18 | | O/C Timings | 4-4-4-11 | 5-5-5-12 | 5-6-6-18 | | O/C Voltage | 2.25V | 2.3V | 2.4V | | Testbed | Core 2 Duo E6400, Asus P5B Deluxe, Nvidia 7600GT, WindowsXP SP2 |

Since we are not familiar with price of module at this moment, final judgment raises questions. Indisputably, Apacer created quality memory, but... We repeat it for the third time that price is determination factor whether some product is worth the money invested in it. It will be shown in future, whether Apacer will continue to develop and promote manufacturing of super-speed memory. Given it is a firstborn, it is not bad. |
