Page 2 of 4 High end design was always the synonym for Nikon and marked it off from any competition. Since legendary F3 to the last D2x, Italian studio Giugiaro is meritorious for up-to-date layout of the best Nikon cameras. Does D80 have “Italian blood”, we’re not sure, but the visual part is firmly there.
Regarding assembly part, D80 is excellently constituted device which, within the competition with similar solutions of other manufacturers, regarding design and its ergonomics, is in leading position. Handle is coated with excellent slipping prevention gum base, the best one we felt until now within this category. The shape of the grip will provide better support to users with larger palm of the hand, and we recommend providing additional battery grip for some serious utility, which will provide more operative autonomy up to 5000 pictures, in accordance with Nikon documents beside aforesaid handling support. Disposition of buttons is excellent and photographically oriented. There is option for direct access to most significant settlements, with no exaggerating digging through menus. Finally, the quality of buttons is the best in its class. Other than the size, buttons have large pace, thus an impression when we press any button is more than excellent.
Device has two displays, classical monochromatic LCD on the upper side and large 2.5 inch beside. Screen resolution as well as font quality and graphics used for menu display is ultimate, and regarding options we would single out very viewable and detailed RGB histogram! Definitely, the best designed user interface and LCD we recently saw.
The base of D80 is CCD chip of DX format, 24 x 16mm, with excellent 10.2m pixels of resolution, which sometimes may be “two blades sword”. On one side, we have stately detail level, and from the other side, it is necessary to provide adequate lens glasses with enough resolution for such “dense packed” CCD. Because of that, cheap zoom lenses that come within the kit are recommendable only in form of temporary solution because of two reasons. Additional “pro lenses” are always sharper, and by utility of ultra sound engines provide significantly faster sharpening, thus they completely use Nikon’s excellent auto focus system. Naturally, there’s one minus, pretty higher cost in relation to standard solutions, but, lenses are long-term investment, thus you don’t have to save money, and it is better for you to know that even the best DSLR device is good as its lens are, located in front of photo sensible chip.
