AMD Phenom II 550 Black Edition – Callisto
Callisto is also an astronomy object, but not an star but one of the largest Jupiter satellites. Despite that, Phenom II X2 belongs to new “sky” family of CPUs, or as AMD likes to call it, this is “stars” core series.
Callisto is actually an Daneb core with two cores that has been disabled. There is 6MB of L3 cache and support for DDR3 which makes it faster dual core CPU on the market. Overclock potentials are high, as it is the case with all 45nm AMD CPUs. Sample that we got operated 100% stable at 3900MHz, but at slightly higher frequencies some applications had problems. Although we did manage to test this CPU at full 4GHz, x264 compression test wasn’t able to pass. Stable frequency for our sample was 3.9GHz. With Super PI 1MB maximum was impressive 4140MHz while we used air cooler cooling system (cooler).
We tried to unlock third and fourth core on our sample but without too much success. Reason was maybe BIOS on our motherboard or CPU itself. It is not big secret that few X3 710 and 720 CPUs were successfully unlocked, so we expect that some Callisto CPUs will also be disposed to become quad-core CPUs.
