However, AMD also reported an operating loss of $226 million, and a net loss of $396 million, or $0.71 per share.
"Third quarter results include a negative impact of $120 million, or $0.22 per share, due to ATI acquisition-related, integration and severance charges and impairment of assets." |

Pressured by its partners, Microsoft has decided to extend availability of Windows XP editions among original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and retail channels for an additional five months to June 30, 2008.
"While we’ve been pleased with the positive response we’ve seen and heard from customers using Windows Vista, there are some customers who need a little more time to make the switch to Windows Vista. As it turns out, our official policy as of 2002 is that versions of Windows are available through our retail and direct OEM partners for four years after they ship. Obviously this policy didn’t work with Windows XP given Windows Vista’s delivery date. As a practical matter, most of our previous operating system releases were available for about two years after the new version shipped, so maybe we were a little ambitious to think that we would need to make Windows XP available for only a year after the release of Windows Vista. |

Almost one year ago, John Hui offered $450 million for Gateway's retail division, but Gateway's board refused that offer. Acer, one of the world's leading branded PC vendors, announced yesterday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Gateway, the fourth largest PC company in the US. The combination will create a multi-branded PC-company with over US$15 billion in revenues and shipments in excess of 20 million PC units per year.
Under the terms of the agreement, Acer will commence a cash tender offer to purchase all the outstanding shares of Gateway for $1.90 per share, which represents total equity value consideration of approximately $710 million. It seems that Acer's offer was worth waiting for. The acquisition has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both Gateway and Acer and is subject to standard closing conditions, including approval under Hart Scott Rodino, Exon Florio and similar laws outside the U.S. The acquisition is expected to close by December 2007.
In related news, Acer is also finalizing acquisition of Packard Bell in Europe. This move should help Acer further strengthens its position on global PC market. |

E-mail sent to all of AMD's employees by Hector Ruiz, AMD Chairman and CEO - Dirk Meyer, AMD President and COO, confirmed earlier rumors about departure of Henri Richard, AMD's head of sales and marketing. Dave Orton, former ATI CEO and Executive Vice President of AMD, left the company last month, leaving us wondering who's next.
"We are sad to announce that Henri Richard has made the decision to leave AMD. When Henri joined AMD in 2002, his primary mission was to establish a world-class global Sales and Marketing organization. It is safe to say that he has accomplished that mission, and he is now ready for a new challenge in his career.
While we will certainly miss him, it’s a measure of his success that the organization he leaves behind is fully poised to succeed and capable of maintaining and building the momentum that we have built. Henri’s official departure date is still pending, and we will communicate a leadership plan shortly." |
