internet connectivity lost intermittently 3 Months ago Karma: 0
in spite of my LAN being connected to primary DNS I am still in a situation in which a "possible remote firewall from a second computer is blocking attempts to connect" though "the firewall on your system is properly configured to allow connection.

this has happened with both wireless router and LAN connection. anybody knows what the hell this is. i thought it was a problem with the wire, but that is not the problem. how can a second computer's firewall block my internet connection.

It would be nice to have some more info about your network structure or at least OS that you are currently using.

i am using a compaq pressario v3000 laptop running vista home basic. at the present i am connected via lan on a private network. previously i was hooked through a wireless router which has since been disconnected and the connection is from an ADSL modem. i am also using a private (it was public network, but at the moment it is private) and no other computers (to my knowledge are connected) to my computer.

however, i did download a program from what i believed was a genuine site (WEBEX) though i have uninstalled this program but it could be a reason why a 'remote firewall from a second computer' is causing a blocked internet connection.
thanks for taking the time to read my post. if you need more info just ask.

If I understand you correctly, you are connected to LAN that has router as gateway to internet. Also you had wireless connection to your ADSL router that provided you access to internet. In any of this cases router can cause vista to report this kind of problem.

Question is: are you having trouble connecting to all websites or just few, or you can browse web with no problems but you have problems with some programs accessing internet (Skype, torrent client and similar)?
In any case that “remote firewall from a second computer” can be a router on your LAN. Or not

If you are not familiar with network structure I will explain it: you computer (notebook) is connected to a router that is routing network traffic in LAN. If that router has connection to internet (WAN or similar) than it is also gateway for LAN. All devices in LAN and Internet have numerical IP addresses.

For example:
Your notebook has address: 192.168.0.10
Router has address: 192.168.0.1
If router is also gateway then configuration for your notebooks network connection would be something like this:
IP address: 192.168.0.10
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Domain server: 192.168.0.1-if router supports

You can find out this settings in Vista by keyboard shortcut WindowsKey+R than type cmd hit enter and you got command prompt. Then type: ipconfig /all + Enter and you get settings for all network cards.
Another command that can help you is tracert. Windowskey+R, cmd, enter, and for example type:
tracert www.google.com and hit enter

You will get data route from your notebook to google.com internet domain. If this command doesn’t result in something that has google in its name, last address is address of computer or device that is causing trouble for you.

hi,i am going bonkers trying to figure this problem. i have reinstalled my Vista and then configured the LAN (ethernet) and disabled the router, but the problem persists. when it ran tracert with yahoo.com the first address returned was mine and then after yahoo.com i got this address 195.66.226.129
this is what i got from running ipconfig /all

OK ... now we know that your notebook is connecting to network with its NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller which is integrated network solution and it works OK. First address returned was yours 192.168.1.3 and that is normal. Last address is also normal because that is address of yahoo server.

Your gateway address is 192.168.1.1 and it is normal too. Problem is: I don't know what device is on that address.

Another problem is this part of your post: "and disabled the router". If you you refer to windows vista service named router and remote service (access) - than you can leave it disabled. If you refer to device that is actually a Router Device in you network than after disabling it you didn't have access to Internet and that is normal too.

Now ... the big question is: is Your router device (that can be found on IP 192.168.1.1) a wireless router? Let me explain. You are connected to router device with network cable (other end of that cable is plugged in your notebook). So if router uses wireless connection for Internet access that wireless connection maybe the problem (wireless communication can be unstable thanks to weather conditions or any kind of electro magnetic fields, microwave oven for example).

If your router isn't using wireless connection for Internet access than You have few more possibilities. Maybe your network cable is faulty and you need to replace it (if no Internet access happens when you move cable). Maybe your router device is not working properly. Maybe you need to power your router with an UPS because unstable electrical power supply can cause your router to act strange.

Also, it would be nice if you could find out when you lose Internet connection and under what conditions.

well thanks for all your help. it could have been a problem with the cable or at least after the ISP fixed the line there has not been any more trouble and i am enjoying uninterrupted connection. however, a totally wierd thing happened and that was a system crash (at least that's what it seemed like) and i had to run the computer in safe mode to restore the settings to a previous date. the problem stemmed from windows automatic updates and so, now i am forced to switch off automatic updates. the restore has now knocked my antivirus software out (can't get auto-protect working ) error 30350006. i did what symantic suggested and it restored the autoprotect but then it again went off. i never had half these troubles with an assembled pc over three years of heavy use as i am having with a compaq laptop that is barely seven months old.

thanks again, and if you know what i should do about norton do let me know. perhaps reinstall it?

I'm glad ISP fixed your connection problems. I had similar problems on HP notebook (HP actually acquired Compaq in 2002 ). After installation on SP1 for Vista problem was solved but i have achieved stable Symantec AV operation only until i have deinstalled it and installed newer version of same product on stable Vista with SP1.
